چکیده

In this paper we study the suitability and performance of conventional time delay of arrival estimation for humanoid robots. Moving away from simulated environments, we look at the influence of real-world robot's shape on the sound source localization. We present a TDOA/GCC based sound source localization method that successfully addresses this influence by utilizing a pre-measured set of TDOAs. The measuring methodology and important aspects of the implementation are thoroughly presented. Finally, an evaluation is made with the humanoid robot Nao. The experimental results are presented and discussed. Key-Words: Microphone arrays, time delay of arrival, sound source localization, generalized cross correlation.

Auditory Fovea Based Speech Enhancement and Its Application to Dialog System

Robots, in particular, mobile robots should listen to and recognize speeches with their own ears in a real world to attain smooth communications with people. This paper presents an active direction-pass filter (ADPF) that separates sounds originating from the specified direction by using a pair of microphones. Its application to front-end processing for speech recognition is also reported. Sinc...

Improved Sound Source Localization and Front-Back Disambiguation for Humanoid Robots with Two Ears

An improved sound source localization (SSL) method has been developed that is based on the generalized cross-correlation (GCC) method weighted by the phase transform (PHAT) for use with humanoid robots equipped with two microphones inside artificial pinnae. The conventional SSL method based on the GCC-PHAT method has two main problems when used on a humanoid robot platform: 1) diffraction of so...

Active Sound Localization in a Symmetric Environment

Localization for humanoid robots becomes difficult when events that disrupt robot positioning information occur. This holds especially true in symmetric environments because landmark data may not be sufficient to determine orientation. We propose a system of localizing humanoid robots in a known, symmetric environment using a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter and a sound localization system. Th...

Active audition system and humanoid exterior design

In this paper, we present that a humanoid active audition system improved noise cancellation using humanoid cover acoustics and the cover design for an industrial exterior design. From the viewpoint of a design, the cover of humanoid should be functional and beautiful. And, the humanoid exterior should not obstruct the motion of the humanoid. In other words, a humanoid with motion requires desi...

Monte Carlo Localization for Humanoid Robot Navigation in Complex Indoor Environments

Accurate and reliable localization is a prerequisite for autonomously performing highlevel tasks with humanoid robots. In this article, we present a probabilistic localization method for humanoid robots navigating in arbitrary complex indoor environments using only onboard sensing, which is a challenging task. Inaccurate motion execution of biped robots leads to an uncertain estimate of odometr...
